Things to Do Near Verfeil-sur-Seye, Tarn-et-Garonne

Cambou is a hamlet, not a village: a handful of houses in the hills between Varen and Verfeil-sur-Seye. There is no shop, no bar and no through traffic. What there is, within half an hour in the car, is about as much as anywhere in France gives you: nine medieval towns, three markets a week, a river you can swim in, and food worth planning a day around.

This is what we would tell a friend who had a week here.

Your first morning

Verfeil is a kilometre away and has a boulangerie. Varen is two, and its small supermarket will take an order the day before, so you can walk in at nine and collect bread and croissants for twelve without a queue. It is worth doing on the first evening.

Varen is also where you will end up for most things: pharmacy, post office, a bar, and a restaurant on the bank of the Aveyron.

St Antonin’s Sunday market fills a whole medieval town and is genuinely one of the best in the region. One piece of advice, learned the hard way: be parked before 10am. After that you will spend forty minutes looking and arrive in a bad mood.

Villefranche is easier. There is free parking at Treize-Pierres, a hundred spaces, and a free shuttle bus into the bastide on Thursday mornings between nine and half past twelve.

Hot afternoons

The obvious answer is the pool, which is fenced, private, and 12 metres long, enough for actual lengths rather than splashing.

When you want to leave the house: kayaking from St Antonin down to Cazals is the thing guests come back talking about. It is ten kilometres of slow water through the gorge and takes most of a morning. Nature-Escapade hire the boats, and this is the part that matters: they meet you at Cazals and drive you back to your car. Nobody paddles upstream. Go early on a hot day, avoid weekends, take a picnic. Mention our name and you may get something off. Their website is nature-escapade.com.

For smaller children, Laguepie is better: a quiet stretch of the Aveyron with a roped-off area, inflatables and an actual lifeguard. You can lose an afternoon there very happily.

If it rains

It does, occasionally. Albi has the Toulouse-Lautrec museum and a very good covered market. Cap Découverte, about forty minutes away, is a former open-cast mine turned adventure park, with a very long zip wire, karting and a dry ski slope. It is not remotely picturesque and teenagers love it. The lake beach and water sports closed at the end of the 2025 season, and the rest of the programme changes from year to year, so check what is running before you set off.

Where to eat

Le Moulin de Varen. 292 Chemin des Berges, Varen · 05 63 65 45 10. Two minutes down the road, in an old mill on the bank of the Aveyron. The chef trained in starred kitchens and cooks to whatever the market had that morning. It runs at 4.8 out of 5 and it is comfortably the best food within walking distance of the house. Lunch, and closed midweek, so ring first.

Auberge de la Grange du Cros. Le Cros, 46260 Saillac · 05 65 24 77 13. A stone barn on a farm in the middle of nowhere, run by a couple who grow or source almost everything themselves, with a short menu that changes constantly. It holds 4.9 out of 5 across more than five hundred reviews. The best evening you will have all week, and not a secret, so book well ahead.

Le Gazpacho. 25 Avenue Docteur Paul Benet, St Antonin · 05 63 30 63 85. A big brasserie with a hundred seats under the shade of its terrace, open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, all year. Not the most refined cooking in the valley, but it is reliable, the prices are fair, and it is the one place you can always get a table.

Lunch is served between midday and two, and not a minute after. Tell us if you would like a table booked and we will do it.

After dark

There is no street lighting here and nothing on the horizon. Turn the outside lights off, walk down to the barn on a clear night, and you will see shooting stars within a few minutes. There is a low wall on the far side of the road that faces west, which is where to be at sunset.

Most afternoons a flock of sheep is walked down the lane past the house to fresh grass, and back again in the evening. It is the busiest thing that happens all day.
